Beginnings & Endings

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new topic/Top Ten list and invite everyone to share their own answers. I'm so obsessed with lists!

So, I ended up making a little change to this list because I couldn't think of that many series that I want to start. There are a number I'm interested in, but not that many that really I've been really dying to start.  Because of that, I decided to pick five series I'd like to start (but haven't yet) and five series I'd like to finish (but haven't yet).

Top Ten Series I'd Like to Start or Finish But Haven't Yet
1. The Passing Bells by Phillip Rock - I love the covers of this series, and it's being compared (in some ways) to Downton Abbey. Add to that my love for family sagas, and I can't wait to actually start this series. I've even bought all three of the books because I expect to love them.

2. Cinder by Marissa Meyer - I've seen this on so many "Best of 2012" lists, and I bought it almost two months ago for that very reason. But I STILL haven't read it! I've even heard Scarlet is better so I know that I have good things to look forward to, so hopefully I get to this one soon.

3. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne Valente - I bought this last August after falling in love with the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. I didn't even look up any reviews - I just knew I wanted to read this enchanting series. However, I still haven't started this and now there's a book two. I better get on it!

4. The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons - This has been on my wishlist for months, but I have always gone back and forth on actually buying it. It's such a thick book, and I don't know if my TBR can take it! It was on sale for Kindle last month, so I finally snagged a copy for myself. Here's to hoping I actually read it in the near future.

5. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas - I know this got mixed reviews (so people really loved it and some sounded disappointed by it), but I'm still really excited to start this series. I love that it's got a kick-butt heroine!
6. Requiem by Lauren Oliver - This is the only final book that hasn't been released for months (it actually comes out today), but I still wanted to include it on my list. I originally planned to read this as soon as it was published, but I may wait a little bit now. I've read such mixed reviews that I'm not dying to finish it right away, but I do still want to know how everything ends.

7. The Wild Rose by Jennifer Donnelly - I have no excuse for not having finished this series. Well, actually I do. I loved the first two, but I honestly want to reread them before starting this one. But since they are all 600+ pages, I just haven't been ready to tackle them yet. But I will, I will! I MUST know how these end.

8. Reached by Ally Condie - I enjoyed Matched, but I was pretty disappointed with Crossed. However, I feel like I'm invested in the series, so I still want to know how it ends. I'm just not that motivated to actually finish it...

9. Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness - I was completely surprised by these books, since they aren't something I'd typically pick up. While I've enjoyed them, I found the world and events in them to be so intense that I have had to take a long break in between each book. I read The Ask and the Answer in January, so I think it will still be another month or two before I'm ready to finish the series in Monsters of Men.

10. Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore - I read Graceling and Fire back-to-back for the first time last year, but I still haven't read Bitterblue. I'll be fixing that soon, but I'm definitely nervous to read this final book. There have been a lot of so/so reviews, which is always sad to know going into a final book. Hopefully I feel differently!

  1. The Ask and The Answer and Monsters of Men are on my list to finish too - I actually thought Reached took the story in an interesting direction. You can read my full review here: http://kristinharkins.blogspot.com/2013/01/recommendation-matched-trilogy-by-ally.html

I've heard soooo much good stuff about Cinder too that I think I'm going to have to pick it up.

    1. Yeah, I've had to read the Chaos Walking books slowly. They are SO intense! I'll definitely have to check out your review of Reached - glad you thought it was interesting.

  3. I just want to say I am so enjoying your blog. I feel very compelled to check out Cinder and The Passing Bells and The Bronze Horseman. So many books and so little time!

  4. The Lunar Chronicles look so good and I really want to read them as well! Great list :)

    Here's my Top Ten!

  5. I'm one of those people who LOVED Cinder (and the sequel Scarlet), so I highly encourage you to start the series. While it takes a while to get into the book, I promise it's worth it. Marissa Meyer is clever with her storytelling, and creative with her world and characters.

I'm also one of those people who LOVED Throne of Glass. I know that not everyone enjoyed that book as much as I did, but I had so much fun reading it. It inspired me to start writing again, which I'm grateful for, but I just love the entire story and premise and am dying to find out what happens next!

I haven't read Bitterblue either, because I've been hesitant about it. I think I need to reread the first two before I can move on because I'm fairly certain I've forgotten little details about the world and the characters.

    1. I remember that you're someone you loved Cinder, and I ADORE your reading taste so I think I need to trust you and move it up the TBR.

Oh, I love that it inspired you to start writing again! That's really cool - and you'll always have that cool connection to the book.

Glad I'm not the only one hesitant to read Bitterblue. So nervous!

  6. Hannah, your feelings about Requiem and Reached -- I feel exactly the same way. I'm not reading a book right now because I just finished one. Requiem will be delivered to me today, but I don't know what to do. I'm so nervous I'm going to hate it. And I didn't love Crossed either, so that makes me feel so iffy about Reached. Matched just SUCKED ME IN and then womp, womp, womp when I read Crossed.

That's a lot of overdrive crazy typing from me, but I just FEEL THE SAME WAY!

    1. Matched sucked me in, too, and I was majorly let down when I read Crossed. That's why I'm even more iffy on reading Reached - I really don't love the series at this point. Oh Requiem. I cannot wait to get your thoughts and see if you agree with a lot of what's been said about it at this point.

      SO NERVOUS!

  7. Great list! I <3 Paullina Simons' The Bronze Horseman and Catherynne Valente's Fairyland books, I hope you enjoy them when you get to them =D

    Here's my TTT =)

  8. Okay, So: I want to read The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland SO BAD. It may be my first book purchase when my self-imposed book buying hiatus is over.

As for Reached? I too loved Matched and was so disappointed in Crossed. Reached, though? Reached was excellent. Potentially better than the first two books combined. Promise.

And I am having the EXACT same issue with Bitterblue. I loved Graceling and LOVED Fire. So, I should love this one too? I don't know why I just can't read it yet?!

    1. YAYYYYY for celebrating with a new books once your book buying hiatus is over. Just don't buy ALL THE BOOKS once the ban is listed :)

Okay, really excited to hear that Reached is better than the first two books! I'll definitely have to let you know what I think when I finally read it.

Haha I love that you're unsure about Bitterblue, too. I know that I want to read it, but I just can't seem to prioritize it.

  9. The Bronze Horseman was on my list this week as well. I think I’ve wanted to read it since I was in elementary school but I always forgot when I got to the library. I’ve only recently become aware of The Passing Bells, but I agree that it sounds amazing!

  10. Oooh, Bitterblue haters to the left. I think it's so good, and Cashore does such an amazing job of tying the series together, and once you read it we can have a conversation about Leck because oh man, do I have a lot of feelings about what Cashore does with (in this case, the ghost of) his character.

    1. Hahaha! Okay, I'll definitely have to discuss with you once I finally read it!

  12. I am so, so scared to read Requiem. Like you, I've read so many mixed reviews and I don't want to be disappointed with a series I've loved up until this point. I do highly recommend Throne of Glass and Cinder--both are extremely entertaining and well-written.

    1. Oh, the reviews have been SO mixed. It's just making me more nervous about this series. I really enjoyed the first two books, so I'm going to be so disappointed if the conclusion is bad. EEEKKK! So nervous about it. Thanks for the high recommendations on the other two :)

  13. I thought about doing my TTT similar to yours, but I do want to start a lot of series, so I ended up just going with the prompt. I LOVED Cinder, but I haven't read any of the other books on your list to-start. I also need to finish Requiem and Monsters of Men!

    1. Seriously, EVERYONE loves Cinder. Clearly I need to read it already!

  14. I like how you spun this.
I sooo need to finish the Matched and Across the Universe series.
And I too totally need to start Cinder.

  15. Throne of Glass is SO GOOD!!! So is Cinder and Scarlet, you will love them!!

Monsters of Men is so freakin' good!! I binge read this series last year and I just love the characters and the story, I hope you get to that one soon! :)

    1. Haha just one more person who loves Throne of Glass and Cinder. I totally need to get on it already!

And I know, the Chaos Walking books are really good! I'm just having to read them slow because the world is so weird that I have to take breaks from it after each book hahaha!

  16. Fun twist on this week's question! I had a hard time thinking of 10 series I wanted to start, although I could have listed dozens I want to finish. Of your first 5, I definitely recommend reading CINDER and SCARLET right away. They're both excellent. Also, I love The Chaos Walking series, but I know what you mean about intense. They definitely are!

Glad to have found you via TTT :)

    1. Thanks. Glad you liked the twist! I'm the same way - I could think of more series that I want to finish than I want to start. I think my takeaway from this week is that I need to read Cinder immediately. SERIOUSLY!

And yes, SO INTENSE! Glad you found me :)

  18. I like how you interpreted the prompt here! I'm sure there are a number of series I have started that I haven't gotten very far in yet that I would like to continue with. I also have The Girl Who Circumnavigated on my list. I haven't really seen the illustrations, but it has gotten rave reviews and I bought my sister copies of the books. I enjoyed Bitterblue. It has gotten some mixed reviews, but I still thought it was really good. I hope you are able to enjoy it!

    1. Glad you liked my interpretation :) It was MUCH easier for me to think of series I wanted to finish than those I wanted to start. You'll definitely have to look at the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. SO COOL! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed Bitterblue. I'll be reading it soon!

  19. I'm with you! I liked Matched, was disappointed by Crossed and truthfully.... I started and didn't finish Reached! I just wasn't feeling it and it got overly political for me.
Ooooh start Cinder!!! I actually haven't been able to read Scarlet yet, but I loved Cinder! :)

    1. Uh ohhhhh.... didn't even finish Reached? That's no good. I was VERY disappointed by Crossed, so I'm definitely nervous about concluding this series.

And everyone has told me to start Cinder! Haha!

  20. I need to read Fairyland, too. I've heard it's fantastic.

  21. The Fairyland books are SO GOOD! Seriously. The third book comes out in October, so as much as I want to tell you to get on it immediately, maybe wait so you can read them all at once.

    1. Oh, I'm glad to know the third comes out in October. Maybe I'll wait a little long so I can binge read them. Thanks for telling me that :)

  22. I liked the way you split up this TTT! Such a great idea. I almost did this week's but I couldn't think of 10 series that I really wanted to start. But you should definitely start Throne of Glass and Cinder!! Hope you get to them soon! :)

    1. Haha yeah that's why I had to change the prompt a little - I couldn't think of 10 that I wanted to start. Haha those are the two everyone is telling me to read! Guess I need to move them up the TBR.

  23. The Chaos Walking Trilogy is one of those finishes that hit me JUST right. Not completely wrapped up in a little bow (per typical Patrick Ness fashion) but not wide open either. SO GOOD.

Looking forward to reading Bitterblue with you too!

    1. Oooohhh glad to hear you loved how Chaos Walking ended! That makes me really happy!

      And yayyyy Bitterblue!

  24. I loved Cinder and I LOVED Scarlet. I honestly can't wait for you to read that series because it's just... so unique, and I hope you will love it as much as I did. (Because then you're in for something great!) I've been wanting to read The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland (and something haha) for a while. It looks great :) I have read a bit of Throne of Glass but left it at my aunt's and never got back to it, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

Also, what you said about the Matched series is exactly how I felt about it! I liked Matched, didn't like Crossed at all, and I definitely want to finish it. BUT. I haven't yet. I keep saying it's because it hasn't been released in Dutch yet and I have the other two in Dutch so my series need to match, but the truth is... I'm not that motivated to pick it up asap. I will get to it eventually :)

ps. Looooove the graphic you made! It looks so pretty!

    1. Woohoo! I definitely need to read them if you love them so much :) Then we can discuss and obsess together! I've heard great things about the Fairyland books, so I'm hoping that I'll love them too.

SO glad you know exactly what I mean about the Matched series! I liked (not loved) the first one, and then I really disliked Crossed. So now I'm just not that excited about reading Reached... I'm totally with you on the series having to match. And the lack of motivation to pick it up.

THANKS! That means a lot coming from you because you're the graphic queen :)

  25. 1. You will love Cinder and Scarlet, I just know it.

    2. I'm having a FIT to read the Valente books too! Seriously.

    3. Monsters of Men. YESS. Be ready. Intense x 1000.

    4. Hooray for Delirium! I don't like that I'm seeing mixed reviews for Requiem. It makes me want to stop after Pandemonium! I feel like I've waited all of this time and now I feel a big let-down from what I'm seeing on TWITTER. Help.

    5. Are there Cashore discussions I'm missing? I need to read Bitterblue too.

      3. Haha x 1000? Oh my!

      4. I don't have any advice for you, lady. I'm feeling the exact same way. I have seriously considered not reading it, but I DO want to find out what happens so I'm torn. Ugh!

      5. I haven't seen any so you're not missing anything as far as I know.
