Since I've always been fascinated with history, I'm thinking that I may just need to read this :)Alexa S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13185723439360170259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453643548383938123.post-74244079490952719562013-02-24T21:25:33.266-05:002013-02-24T21:25:33.266-05:00Oh yay! That actually sounds really neat and makes the cover cohesive to the story, which I completely appreciate.

I can't imagine WHY ON EARTH you'd want to skip over parts of Anna K??!! Hope you enjoy if you end up reading it! I just HAD to know what it was about and if it was a great at that cover made it look.

The story of the title and necklace: So, one of the first stories Elaine tells is about her grandfather fleeing from his home country (Romania, I think) and immigrates to the U.S. In Romania, he fell in love with a non-Jewish girl and made her some animals out of tin (horse, lion, etc.). Her brothers found the tin animals and then basically ran him out of the country because he was Jewish and was trying to have a relationship with their sister.

Their grandfather lives with them while they're growing up, so it's a story they've heard over and over. Well, at one point in their childhood, they learn that their grandfather has embellished or outright lied about many of the things he's told them. A young Barbara confronts him, essentially calling him a liar and questioning the story of his flight and if he'd ever really worked with tin. So, he makes the girls tin animals as proof that the story he'd told was true.

The tin horse in particular, and it being turned into a necklace, come into play later on when Elaine is searching for her sister. I won't say how specifically since that's potentially a spoiler, but that should at least explain the significance :)

Haha not terrible to admit that about Water for Elephants! I actually laughed reading that. One thing I love about rereading is that it's totally acceptable to skim certain parts if you so choose. After all, you already read it once and know what happened. I haven't skipped stuff in rereading yet, but I can think of a few I would. Anna Karenina, for example. I'd love to reread, but I'll likely skim/skip some of the more expository sections when I do!Hannahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05058757489545239601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453643548383938123.post-91753928692688941322013-02-24T14:54:27.759-05:002013-02-24T14:54:27.759-05:00Oh, I bet this would be lovely on audio with a gre...Oh, I bet this would be lovely on audio with a great reader. And I think then some of the pacing issues wouldn't be as noticeable because hearing the narrator read would be like sitting down with someone and listening to them tell their story. Hope you like it! This is exactly the sort of historical fiction I LOVE to find. (And the awesome cover is great, too, of course.) I do love the unique perspective on Jewish society in a less widely documented time period, and Elaine's narrative voice, as you describe it, sounds like it would be one that I'd enjoy. You know that I just love book covers and I was so curious for the time when I would get the chance to stop by and see what this book was actually about and how you liked it based on that cover. But what I can't determine is how the cover with the title and the necklace plays into the story, and I think it will drive me crazy if I don't find out - just because I've loved this cover for the past few days. So if you think about it, would you tell me? If it is a spoiler, just tell me when you can if you remember.

Also, I can relate a little bit to what you mention about what you most love/dislike about this book. I hate to use this example, but in Water for Elephants, which I loved, I felt the same way. And that was even MORE when I re-read with the audiobook, so much so that I skipped through the older-narrated parts! (I can't believe I just admitted that. How awful of me. I just couldn't stand it anymore. But the book was a little better.)Asheley T.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03908795522290889438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453643548383938123.post-79689070879465447322013-02-18T15:19:11.043-05:002013-02-18T15:19:11.043-05:00Great review.
