Hey Girl, I'll Buy Your Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new topic/Top Ten list and invite everyone to share their own answers. I'm so obsessed with lists!

I actually struggled a little bit with this list! I thought it'd be really easy for me to come up with ten authors, but I realized as I made it that I don't have as many authors who are legitimately auto-buys for me as I originally thought. I've been disappointed by auto-buys in the past, so I tend to be a little more cautious now (even if it's from a favorite author). So, here are ten authors that are most likely to be an auto-buy for me!

Top Ten Auto-Buy Authors

1.  Melina Marchetta - This is one of the authors that is newest to me on my list, but it's the very first name that came to mind. I've read Marchetta's contemporary (all books except Looking for Alibrandi - I'm saving it for the right moment) and fantasy (only Finnikin of the Rock, but currently reading the whole series). Y'all, these are two very different genres. And somehow, she's managed to be incredible at both. She's the one of the only authors on my list who has written books in more than one genre, which is why I feel comfortable saying she's absolutely an auto-buy for me.

2. Tahereh Mafi - I took me forever to read Shatter Me because I was convinced I was going to hate it. Every time I read the first few pages in the bookstore, I was put off by the strikethroughs. Then, I found it at the library and gave it a chance. Holy cow! Why didn't anyone tell me sooner? I've since read Destroy Me and Unravel Me, and I cannot wait to see what Mafi writes next. I will absolutely be purchasing whatever she publishes because I have a feeling she's only going to grow as a writer. And I already love her!

3. Jennifer Donnelly - Donnelly writes historical fiction, which is probably my favorite genre to read. My favorite thing about her is that she has successfully written both young adult and adult books, and I've loved them all. I have a feeling she'll likely continue to write historical fiction in the future, and she's got one guaranteed reader right here. I don't care what's she writing about - I want to read it!

4. Denise Hildreth Jones - Jones writes Christian fiction with a helping of Southern charm thrown in, and I've been a fan of her books since I was in high school. You may remember that one of my top ten favorite bookish memories involved her Savannah series. She's probably one of the least-known authors on my list, but I had to include her because I want to read anything this woman writes. I love that you can really see her heart in her books, and I love the Southern sass in many of her characters. It's actually an exciting week for me because she just released two new books - one fiction and one non-fiction. Now, I've got some reading to go do!

5. Emily Giffin - Giffin has built an empire based on writing about successful, driven women making difficult choices. I don't always like or agree with her characters, but I'm always drawn in to her stories. There are similar themes and characters in all of her novels, but I love that I kind of know what to expect when I read one of her books. I'm always excited when there's a new one I can take to the pool with me! They are perfect reads for days when you just want to sit back, relax and enjoy.

6. Stephanie Perkins - I was a little iffy on including Perkins because her next book, after Isla and the Happily Ever After, is going to be a horror/teen slasher novel. Honestly, that is so not my kind of book. However, I realized she deserved to be on the list because I loved her first two books so much that I'm legitimately really curious about the new one. If anything is going to get me to read something outside my comfort zone, it'll be because someone like Stephanie Perkins has written it.

7. Julie Buxbaum - Buxbaum has written two books, and it's been four years since the last one. I figured she had to make the list based solely on the amount of times I look her up in Goodreads to see if maybe, maybe, this time there is news of a third book. Alas, I don't see one on the horizon, but I'm going to keep hoping! I just love something about the way she writes, and I know I'll be auto-buying whatever she comes out with next. (Seriously, Julie. Please write something new! Until then, I'll just keep rereading...)

8. J.K. Rowling - It wasn't that long ago that I fell in love with the Harry Potter books, but that didn't stop me from buying The Casual Vacancy on the very day it was released. Despite having gotten 100 pages into the book, I still haven't finished. I hate that I'm not clicking with this one! However, I'm keeping Rowling as an auto-buy author because I'll still get her next book in the hopes that I'm able to connect with it more.

9. Kathryn Stockett - I'm going out on a limb with this one, seeing as how she's only written one book, but I'm sticking by this decision because that one book was SO good! As I've already mentioned, I love historical fiction. I'd obviously be excited if Stockett writes another historical fiction book, but really I just want her to write another book. I don't care what genre - I just want more from her.

10. Veronica Rossi - Rossi was my wild card on the list! I considered multiple authors for my final spot in the top ten, but I ultimately settled on Rossi for a few reasons. I loved that she has written these believable boy characters with such a strong, admirable friendship. I really enjoy the world she's created and the way she develops relationships. Finally, after hearing her talk about her book at a signing, I was just so impressed. I have a feeling great things are coming from this author (and that's saying a lot because I already think her first two books are awesome).

  1. Hehe, I love your title for this post! Ooh, Tahereh Mafi is on my list, too! I just love her writing SO MUCH. Seriously. I bought a hardcover book for her (Unravel Me), and that just DOES NOT happen in my world, LOL. I came supersuper close to adding Stephanie Perkins because her books are wonderful. But I don't actually own either of them, so. In a world where I had a little more money to spend on books, she would so be there. Because she is fabulous. ♥ I'm so excited for Isla!

    1. Haha glad you enjoyed the title! And YAYYY for Tahereh Mafi :) I also bought the hardcover of Unravel Me at FULL PRICE in a legit bookstore. That doesn't happen for me that often. I was kind of iffy on Stephanie, but I figured those books legit make me smile whenever I think of them so that was enough :) I'm so excited for Isla, too!

  2. I've only read one author on your list - JK Rowling. *is embarrassed* I'll have to remedy that soon.

JK didn't make it to my list though. As much as I LOVE Harry Potter, and basically worship Rowling's writing, I wasn't that interested in her newest book, The Casual Vacancy. It just isn't my type of read, so I passed over it once I read the excerpt.

    1. Haha that's okay! I had a somewhat eclectic list, but I do hope you read some of the authors on here one day :) And I can't get into The Casual Vacancy but I still included her because I DID buy it haha! I will try again with it one day but I had to set it aside for now. But I don't blame you for passing on it!

  3. Veronica Rossi is one author I've been meaning to try, but haven't yet. I still haven't read anything by Rowling.

    1. Definitely read Under the Never Sky - it's really good! A little confusing at first, but I ended up loving it. And it's okay you haven't read any Rowling - I didn't until like a year and a half ago :)

  4. I love Jennifer Donnelly! I wish I would have added her to my list. A Northern Light is one of my favorites.

  8. O man, I forgot about Kathryn Stockett! You're right that it's a little hard to tell since she only wrote one book so far, but I will DEFINITELY buy whatever she comes out with next! The Help is one of my all-time favorite novels.

As for JK Rowling, I really did enjoy The Casual Vacancy even though I wasn't sure at first. If you ever do finish it, I'd love to hear your final opinion!

    1. I almost didn't include her because she just has the one book, but (like you) I figured my love for the book was strong enough that I'd definitely buy whatever she comes out with next.

Glad to hear you ended up enjoying The Casual Vacancy! That makes me more motivated to pick it back up. I do plan on finishing - I just had to set it aside for a while because I realized I was dragging my feet about reading it. I have to go into it next time with different expectations!

  12. Oh yes! Emily Giffin! She's definitely one of my favourites. I'd also pick Sophie Kinsella and Kristin Hannah. Just wonderful writers!

    Great list!

    1. I don't think I've read anything from Kinsella beyond her Shopaholic series (and maybe one stand-alone book?) but I need to see what else she's written. And I don't know that I've read anything by Kristin Hannah so now I definitely need to check her out!

  14. Melina Marchetta is great. It's interesting you haven't read Looking for Alibrandi - have you seen the movie? I love them both.

And thanks for nominating me! Glad you enjoy my blog <3

    1. You really should! Her books are sometimes a little confusing at first because there are a lot of characters, but the payoff in the end is definitely worth it. I love her!

  16. After reading Jellicoe Road MM is not on my auto-buy list, as well. I loved Shatter Me, and Unravel me was pretty good too. Mafi is definitely on my auto-buy list! ^^

  17. You have several on this list that I haven't read or even heard of. EEK. I totally agree with the incomparable T Mafi and the fabulous V Rossi. I would like to throw in (since I didn't make a list) that I am auto- for Julia Kagawa and Lauren DeStefano. I do own all of the HP books but I don't have Casual Vacancy, so I'm almost auto- on her, right? I also would say Erin Morganstern as well based on ONE BOOK because I've spent more time listening to/reading that book than is healthy.

An adult fiction for you? Robert Goolrick. Have you read him? Historical fiction with those doomed romances that I love oh-so-much. His latest is Heading Out to Wonderful and the one before it is A Reliable Wife. I LOVE HIS BOOKS. Like, hug the books and sleep with them beside my bed, love his books. They break my heart and make me smile and cry and just everything. His ability to paint a picture of the setting - both time and place, I think - is what sold me on him. Fan for life.

    1. WOOHOO for totally new-to-you authors! I love picking a few writers that are off the radar a little bit :) Totally not surprised you agree on Mafi and Rossi. They really are awesome! And now I think I need to reread Wither (and then continue with the rest of the series) because of your great love for it. I think I was iffy on it, but I may not have been in the right mood. And I haven't read any Kagawa. EEK!

Ooohhh I love Erin Morganstern! Another great addition because that book is amazinggg. I really hope she has a new book soon AND that it's just as awesome!

I have not read anything by Robert Goolrick, although I have seen his books before. Glad to get your recommendation - I'll definitely be looking into them now!

  18. I think a lot of people really struggled to get through the Casual Vacancy, you aren't alone! For me so much of it was the dialect translated into writing, I had a hard time following without getting distracted. Great list!

    1. Yeah, it definitely made me feel better that it seemed like others struggled with it too. It's not that I don't want to read it and don't think I'll enjoy it - more that I need to be in the right frame of mind before diving in. I think my expectations were off when I first picked it up, and that kept me from loving it.

  19. I think it's awesome that Jennifer Donnelly made your list! I haven't read anything by her yet, but I did intend to do so last month. I'm late (a bit) on that, but it's going to happen. Here's to hoping I love her as much as you do!
