January 2014: On My Shelves + Recap

Sarah Hearts
I'm sure that I sound like a broken record, but January went by so quickly! I was itching to get all of my review books off my plate this past month, so I decided to just go for it! I powered through and read every review book that I had from NetGalley (aside from two much older titles), and I'm feeling so much better about the state of my bookshelf. I'm taking a break from NetGalley for the time being, and I couldn't be more excited about it.

2014 also got off to a great start with two five-star reads, and two that came sooo close to five. There were a number of other books that I really enjoyed reading, but the following four truly stole the show!

My Four Favorite Reads in January: The Wife, The Maid, and the Mistress by Ariel Lawhon, The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay, The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski and Forever, Interrupted by Taylor Jenkins Reid (reviews coming soon!)

  1. January did go by super fast. I didn't get nearly as much done as I had hoped.

I really want to read A Mad, Wicked Folly. People have been tempting me! But I must not, because I have a book buying ban to uphold. Not A Drop to Drink is FANTASTIC. I hope you like it!

    1. STAY STRONG! (If you're still on the ban, that is, and who really knows if you are since I'm replying so late…)

  2. If I'm being honest, January was a little bit of a mixed bag in terms of positive and negative experiences and I can't say I'll be sorry to see it go. Hopefully February has something a little better in store. I definitely agree, though - January seemed like it positively flew by!

While I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on a number of the books you acquired this month ( The Sea of Tranquility!, A Mad, Wicked Folly!, You Had Me At Hello!, etc) I'm particularly excited at the prospect of a review for The Invention of Wings. I was offered this book for review by Penguin Canada back in December but had to turn them down due to scheduling conflicts. That said, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. The concept sounds so lovely and thoughtful and I keep reminding myself to pick up a copy but I haven't had the opportunity to do so yet. Be sure to let me know once you've finished reading it - I can't wait to hear what you thought! :)

  4. I also wanted to get to a bunch of ARCs and I'm happy I got to read most of them for now. January did flew by and I hope to read more in February than I did last month.

Not a Drop to Drink is one of my favorites debuts of 2013. I hope you enjoy it! Also, I'm very excited for A Mad, Wicked Folly and The Winner's Curse.

  5. Hannah, that is freaking AMAZING that you got all your Netgalley reads done. Wow, super envious of you :) I actually have The Sea of Tranquility from Netgalley from AGES (how embarassing) ago, so I'm glad that you really loved that one. Betty also said it was fabulous so between you and her that basically secures the fact that I will probably like it :) I'm gonna put it into my February list to read! I kind of passed of A Winner's Curse because I wasn't sure I would like it, even though I loved looking at everyone's beautiful packages from the pub... I think I might put it on hold at the library though and try my hand at it. I've started dabbling slightly in fantasy, so who knows... maybe here is another fav genre looming in the distance!! AND A MAD WICKED FOLLY! Cass is a freaking DOLL! *swoon*. I have that on hold at the library and sadly I am number 18 so it shall be awhile I think... not that I don't have others to keep me busy lol. It just looks so sooo good... and I'm not sure where this love of history came from lol. I'm looking forward to seeing your review of The Tyrant's Daughter. I got an invite from netgalley to read that one but I passed it up because of the disasterous condition of my review list but I seen you rated it 4 stars!!! Yayyy!!! You also got a wicked haul of books in January :) Love your wrap ups!!!

    P.S. Please make February a video month :) :)

  10. Seventeen books! I'm not sure what you normally read in a month, but that's definitely impressive by my standards!

I keep seeing A Mad Wicked Folly everywhere and I just can't wait to read it! I've heard such good things about it, and it keeps *looking* at me from the bookstore shelf. It just wants to be read, who am I to deny the book?

Happy Reading:) Lindsey @ Bring My Books

    1. Seventeen books is definitely on the high end for me! I'm not sure why I was reading so much - sometimes I go through spurts where I just want to read all the time.

  11. January was a tough month for so many people around me, and I'm sad to say that February hasn't been much better. I wish there was a v-log here though :( Sadface! I'm so proud of you for getting ahead with review books. I've slowly but surely been doing the same and it feels great because I have awesome books I want to read and re-read on my own shelves.

Hope you enjoy everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am now curious about a Mad Wicked Folly and I'll be looking forward to your thoughts! xo
