Highlighting Historical Fiction

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new topic/top ten list and invite everyone to share their own answers. I'm so obsessed with lists - so it makes perfect sense that I'd love this feature!

Earlier this year, I didn't feel inspired by that week's so I twisted it into Top Ten "Under the Radar" Authors You Ought to Read. Little did I know I'd later be faced with this topic! So, I went the underrated books in a genre this week - but check out the authors I think deserve more recognition while you're stopping by!

Top Ten Underrated Historical Fiction Books

* I defined underrated as books with fewer than 10,000 ratings on Goodreads.
** I focused more on books I don't frequently feature rather than just my all-time favorites.

The Caged Graves by Dianne Salerni
A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller

The Soldier's Wife by Margaret Leroy
The Second Duchess by Elizabeth Loupas
The Fever Tree by Jennifer McVeigh
No Angel by Penny Vincenzi
The Ashford Affair by Lauren Willig

P.S. I Shall Be Near to You by Erin Lindsay McCabe
should already be in your TBR pile. Or else.

  1. The second Duchess always attracts me with the cover. I love her dress. A mad wicked folly is high on my to-buy list!

  2. I really want to read The Caged Graves & The Ashford Affair -- and I Shall Be Near to You IS on my TBR! Now that it's in paperback, I'm definitely going to be picking up a copy :)

  4. Ah!! I really want to read The Caged Graves, but I have to admit it--the paperback cover is horrid and the only reason I didn't buy it when it released. It'll have to be a library pick for me. Also I have to admit: I really didn't like The Ashford Affair. Like...really. Which hurt because I LOVE the Pink Carnation series so very much!

  5. There's several of these I've been wanting to read, but the only one I've read so far is A Mad, Wicked Folly (which of course I loved!). As for the others, I do love Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series, and I'm sure once I finish it I'll be dying to read all her other books as well.

  6. It's a good thing I've already read I Shall Be Near To You, I see. Why? That way you won't end up hating me when I tell you that I haven't read a single book on your list this week! I do love historical fiction though - seriously, there was a time when I was completely obsessed. So I consider this list a guide to the novels I should check out as I delve back into reading it!
