My Year in Movies & TV {2018}

I always look forward to the end of the year for a variety of reasons – the holidays, the anticipation of the new year, and the habit of looking back on the past twelve months. Since 2015, I've always recapped the year with a series of posts I call "My Year in." From best books to biggest obsessions, they're some of my favorite posts to write. So, for the next week, you'll see what I loved in 2018. Now it's time for movies & TV! • Movies/TV in 2016 and 2017

I don't feel like I watched as many movies in 2018 as in years past, but I still had five favorites:

Brooklyn – This is the only older movie to make my list, but it still earned a spot because I hadn't watched it before this year. And oh my, how did I miss it? It was right up my alley and definitely a new favorite!

Set It Up – As you can probably see, it was the year of the rom com! I was so excited for this Netflix release and so relieved when it was even better than I'd expected. This is definitely one I'll watch again and again.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before – My favorite and most-watched movie of 2018! I loved the books and am so happy with how the first was adapted. It stayed true to the book, even with some changes, and was so swoony.

Crazy Rich Asians – I am so glad that I made time to see this movie in theaters! I watched it before reading the book, and honestly I don't regret it. This was everything I want in a romantic comedy, and I can't wait for the sequel!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – This wasn't a perfect movie, by any means, but it was still really fun to watch. Is it because I have a crush on Eddie Redmayne? POSSIBLY. But the visual effects are so cool, too.

Similar to movies, I had fewer TV binges this year but still had five shows that stood out:

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – This was my first binge of the year, and I can't believe that I still haven't gotten around to watching the second season. Is it any wonder that I love this show since it's from the brain behind Gilmore Girls?

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries – I watched a few episodes of this show prior to 2018, but this was the year I finally binged it all. And what a delight! This made my costume drama loving heart so happy... and swoony.

Queer Eye – Talk about the surprise of the year! I never watched the original iteration of this show, but I couldn't resist trying the reboot when it was getting a lot of buzz. It's fantastic! Who knew makeovers could be so emotional?

Iliza Schlesinger's Elder Millenial – I watched this three times in 2018 – by myself, with Nick, and then with Kelly – and I have no regrets. That led to a binge of her other comedy specials, and now she's a favorite for me.

Bodyguard – I started this show because of Richard Madden, but I stayed because it was so gripping. I spent an episode or two confused and questioning everything, but the ending made it all worth it. So good!

And to wrap things up, I figured I'd end by mentioning a few other shows in my queue for 2019:

CONTINUED TO LOVE • Grey's AnatomyThis is Us, Jane the Virgin, and The Americans

MUST CATCH UP • Poldark, Outlander, Younger, and Anne with an E

IN MY QUEUE • Howard's End, The White Princess, Killing Eve, and The Man in the High Castle

HOPING TO REWATCH • Downton Abbey, Felicity, Friday Night Lights, and Gilmore Girls

What was your favorite movie of 2018?
Did you binge any new (or old!) TV shows?

  1. Bohemian Rhapsody was my favourite 2018 movie. Call Me By Your Name was my favourite older movies of the year. As far as TV shows go, I'm currently bingeing Gossip Girl (a guilty pleasure of mine) and Mr. Robot. I'd like to rewatch Felicity this year, definitely, and I smiled when I saw it on your list. I've got to catch up on Poldark, Peaky Blinders, and Outlander.

  2. Crazy Rich Asians and To All the Boys I've Loved Before are two of my favorite films ever! I truly loved them both, and especially got emotional over the fact that there are now mainstream American films that feature Asian characters so prominently as leads (or the full cast, really, as it was in CRA). I also LOVE Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, so I'm glad you binged the whole show!
