But yes, it's never a good sign for me when I'm struggling to keep characters straight. But I'll be curious if you ever do read this one!Hannahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05058757489545239601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453643548383938123.post-30911429137621186722014-03-11T13:04:57.082-04:002014-03-11T13:04:57.082-04:00It doesn't sound that strange to me because I ...It doesn't sound that strange to me because I love books set during war time, too. I haven't seen a ton of WWI stuff either - I think I tend to pick up more from WWII (and I'm always dying for more from the Revolutionary War or Civil War). So yes, I don't think you sound strange. Or, if it does, I'm right there with you!

Thanks for the comments on my review, too. I'm so flattered that you find new selections on my blog! That's always been one of my goals - to keep reading a wide variety of stuff and not let blogging narrow my focus too much.Hannahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05058757489545239601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453643548383938123.post-10686073137456003982014-02-17T13:34:33.375-05:002014-02-17T13:34:33.375-05:00Oh wow, I hate that this one fell flat for you bec...Oh wow, I hate that this one fell flat for you because that cover really drew my eye as well. I think the thing that is most 'scary' for me in picking this one up is when you mention that you kept forgetting which of the female characters is which...I often have trouble with that and if another reading friend already had trouble, I possibly would as well. It is a BEAUTIFUL book on the outside, though, and I love that you put it on my radar. I do love the idea that the novel takes place over a condensed period of time (Five days) and that it follows the lives of more than one protagonist at once. I would imagine both would add an interesting dynamic to the story. I love stories that revolve around the characters and their development, but the downside to this is that a novel's success often therefore hinges on the author's ability to make these characters realistic, authentic and relatable. If you fail to connect with them on a significant level, you're often left with a lacklustre feeling about the novel as a whole, which is what seems to have happened here. Plus, I think it's hard to feel passionately about a story when the tone itself seem apathetic. If the book doesn't seem to care, why should I?

I'm sorry that you weren't able to ever connect to this novel in a meaningful way and that your expectations weren't necessarily met :( The premise sounds so promising and this is definitely the sort of story I would ordinarily gravitate toward as well, although after reading your review I don't know that I'll be doing that any time soon. That said, it was nice to read a review of a book I had never heard of before! I love that I'm always able to find original selections and reviews on your blog :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03122190709903711075noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453643548383938123.post-83655680893975361082014-01-30T11:45:43.690-05:002014-01-30T11:45:43.690-05:00Yeah, it has SO much potential! It really did sound like a book that had the potential to be moving and poignant, and I'm sorry that it didn't quite do that for you. It still actually sounds fascinating though!Alexa S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/13185723439360170259noreply@blogger.com
